There are so many relationships in basketball. The player and his parents, siblings or teammates. A player- coach relationship is critical. So is the relationship of a player with officials. Don’t forget the opponents and the fans. There are so many relationships in basketball. What is the most important one?
We feel the most important basketball relationship for a player is the one he has with his basketball. One Hall of Fame high school basketball coach used l the term “alone time” with your basketball. This is a great way to identify that critical time where player spends hours and hours alone with HIS basketball developing the skills necessary to succeed.
Like all relationships, each player will have a different commitment level to his basketball. Some may spend quality time with the basketball every day. Some may be like Kobe Bryant, and sleep with their ball. Others may have an unhealthy relationship. Some may even be abusive. Have you ever seen a player throw or even worse, kick a ball in anger? Some players are neglectful. They might get busy with work, friends, significant others and the basketball is neglected for days and weeks at a time.
No matter what the relationship is, a player has to understand that the time spent alone with the basketball will determine that player’s basketball journey.
Stronger and healthier relationships will result in more opportunities for the player.. For example, if a player spends time working on his shot, develops a strong handle, and is able to pass on time and on target, that player may have an opportunity to play on a town travel team. If that relationship blossoms and grows that play also might have a chance to play for a high school team. Relationship gets even stronger during high school years, the player may even be a starter or all-league player. Others will have the opportunity of being part of an AAU program.
With all these scenarios players will develop relationships with teammates, coaches, and officials. Later in life players may continue the journey with basketball and be officials, youth coaches, high school coaches, personal skill, trainers, and maybe even college or professional basketball players.
